What is Sierra Leone Rising ?
This non-profit was formed in 2006 to support education, and the rebuilding of Bumpe High School after the 11 year Blood Diamond war. Currently, this organization has expanded its’mission to include female empowerment and public health in the Bumpe Chiefdom.
As Sierra Leone Rising continues to grow, the organization has become aware of how inaccessible schooling can be to the girls in the Bumpe Chiefdom. They have found there is a high female dropout rate, low female literacy, high teen pregnancy rate, which is common due to the traditionalized gender roles supported by community. In addition, alarming trends such as skin bleaching occur. All of this is compounded by the lack of support and mentorship available from strong female role models in teaching jobs, since they are less likely to work in rural areas, on top of the reality that the government doesn’t pay them adequately for their valuable work.
Through donations, Sierra Leone Rising has already restored the library, school classrooms, and dining hall. Also, they have provided payment for teachers and supported students with scholarships so they could attend school.
With your donations, Sierra Leone Rising has the ability to empower young girls to fulfill their potential by attending the Bumpe High School and further their education. With your help she rises.
